American-style Donuts

American-style Donuts


  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons fresh yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 7 fl oz milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 40 g melted butter
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt


For icing

  • 2 1/3 cup confectioner’s sugar
  • 2 tbsp. milk
  • Food dye


1 Dilute the yeast in a little lukewarm milk

2 Using an electric beater, mix the egg, sugar, milk, butter and yeast.

3 Add the flour and salt and knead for 5 minutes. Cover with a tea towel and leave to rise for 1 hour 30 minutes.

4 Spread the dough to about a half-inch thickness, then cut out circles of around 3 inches diameter.

5 Carve out a small hole in the center, then place the donuts on a tray lined with baking paper.

6 Cover and allow it to double in volume.

7 Heat 1 quart of oil to 340 °F in the frying pan and fry 1 to 2 minutes on each side, then place on absorbent paper.

8 For the icing, whisk the confectioner’s sugar with one or two teaspoons of milk. (Not too much liquid) Color about half of the preparation with red food dye, for example.

9 Spread the icing on the donuts.

Tip: you can add sugar decorations to your donuts.
